Jennie Toland, Executive Director for the Ford County Breastfeeding Coalition.

Jennie here! I’m a mama of 3 wild ones, registered nurse, semi-adult. Through multiple relationships with breastfeeding I’ve learned it can look different for everyone. It can even be different for same mama different babe. Although my journies have come to a close I hope to reach others and let them know it’s okay not to fit the perfect picture with breastfeeding/chestfeeding. My current roles include: Registered Nurse at the Ford County Health Department, Executive Director of the Ford County Breastfeeding Coalition, and Member-at-Large of the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition Board. I hope to make families in our community feel supported and comfortable connecting with others.

As part of one of my assignments, I was reading “Biomedical Ethics and Peer-to-Peer Milk Sharing”.  This was a wonderful article to read on peer-to-peer milk sharing and what you should know about the ethics when it comes to seeking medical care.  I have included the article here for you to read.

“The principle of autonomy means that individuals should be supported to make healthcare decisions free from deceit, duress, constraint, and coercion. Providers should assist patients in making informed decisions by providing them with the information that they require to do so. Limiting information for the “good of the patient” is paternalistic and interferes with autonomy. Information should only be withheld in very limited circumstances: if the health worker believes that the sharing of information might seriously harm the physical or mental health of the individual, or if the individual states that they do not want the information”

ARTICLE: Biomedical Ethics and Peer to Peer Milk Sharing – Karleen D. Gribble, BRurSc, Ph.D., Clinical Lactation 20212

Choosing Home Birth Newsletter

I wanted to share a wonderful newsletter. I read it when I went to pick up some Pure Encapsulation vitamins at the Chiropractic Office of Dr. Lauren Quint.  Click here for the Fischer and Quint Chiropractic Facebook page.

Home birth has been making a comeback in many parts of the world. That is very exciting news! Around this area most women are told that giving birth in the hospital is the only way to go, but it is not.  We have very competent midwives serving our area. I would like to acknowledge that every woman is different. I always say, “Not all women should birth in a hospital and not all women should birth at home.” That is why it is important that we give women all of their options so they can make an informed choice based on their unique circumstances. If women feel supported and heard they will ask for help but if we insist that we know what is right for everyone and that there is only one way to birth, we are loosing their trust.  In whatever environment a woman decides to birth, it is important that she has her autonomy.  As professionals we are there to assist the women, we are not there to make the decisions for them. You can find so much more info in the newsletter below, Enjoy!

Embracing Birth by Angie Taylor

Last week I received this in the mail. I am super excited to have Angie Taylor’s wisdom in a book. I met Angie almost 5 years ago (can’t believe it has been that long). She helped me through my second birth when I was determined to have a VBAC and to breastfeed. Thank you Angie for starting Private Womb and being there for me. You and Laura have been my inspiration and motivation to provide services to other women. I want to encourage women just like you encouraged and supported me. ❤
